Dũa form: the ten minutes that decide the nails, and the one stage no Da Nang menu charges for
Thirty-nine of the 715 reviews behind this guide are about the shape of a nail or the file that made it. Three reviews in 715 name an actual shape. And not one of the six public menus the city price table rests on puts a price on the filing.
- Thirty-nine of the 715 public reviews behind this guide talk about shape, form or filing, across 31 of the 151 salons. The work gets noticed. The words do not: three reviews in all 715 name a shape · one almond, two rounded · and not one says square, oval, coffin or stiletto. Point at the nail, don't name it.
- Nobody prices it. None of the six Da Nang menus behind the price table sells shaping as a line of its own. The nearest things are LENA's bare 70,000đ manicure, Sunam's 100,000đ nail and pedi care · its menu spells the steps out, remove, cut, file, nipper, cuticle pusher, buff, oil · and Nail Bơ's 20,000đ cắt da. The shape is the free part of the bill, which is exactly why you have to ask for it.
- The window shuts when the base coat goes on. Before it, a change costs a minute; after it, it costs a removal · 10K to 150K across the salons that publish prices · or a repair line. Liti Nail & Hair publishes broken-nail repair at 40,000 to 60,000đ and LENA lists fix 1 nail at 70,000đ.
- The opinion of this piece: keep the machine off the free edge, and say the length as a number. A My Khe reviewer in March singled out a technician who filed each nail by hand instead of with the machine; a 993-review salon on Phạm Tu was marked down in July by a Polish nail professional who noticed the drill bits and heel graters were not sterilised and the buffers had been used before.
Thirty-nine reviews about a file, three words for a shape
Search the 715 public reviews behind this guide for shape, form or filing and 39 come back, spread across 31 of the 151 salons. Thirty-seven of the 39 are five stars, which sounds like a verdict until you notice that 687 of all 715 reviews here are five stars anyway. At 96.1% the house average is slightly higher than the shape set. Nobody is handing out stars for a good file. They are describing it, which is a different and more useful thing.
What they are not doing is naming shapes. Three reviews in 715 do: one at 1998.nailsroom, 172/5 Trần Phú, 432 reviews, in May 2026, from someone who says she has almond nails and that getting them right first time is not something many salons manage · they did, with no correction needed · and two that ask for rounded, at Thiên Ban Nailroom on Bàu Sen 1, 38 reviews, and Nail By Nhỏ Studio, 175/22 Ông Ích Khiêm, 113 reviews. Square, oval, coffin, ballerina, stiletto: zero, in 715 reviews, in a city with 151 nail salons. The English shape chart that every salon in London and Sydney has taped to the wall is not the working vocabulary here.
In Vietnamese the stage has a name, and it comes first. The one Vietnamese-language review in this set, at Uyên Mễ Nail, 94 Phan Thanh, 26 reviews, in September 2026, lists what it admires in order: dũa form · filing the shape · then the apex, then the line work, then the sculpted flowers, then the colour. Shaping is step one of five, and it is the one the customer led with. If you learn two words of salon Vietnamese before you sit down, make them those two.
The 31 salons are not a boutique set either. Nineteen of them have fewer than 200 Google reviews, against 101 of the 151 overall, and the median is 156 against 110 · a nudge, not a pattern. Thao Nails on Nguyễn Chí Thanh, 1,902 reviews, is in it, for a July 2026 review that calls the technician meticulous in filing and shaping and mentions Huy typing I will go along with whatever you want into Google Translate. So is Mei.nail on Võ Nguyên Giáp, 27 reviews, one client at a time, whose August reviewer says the owner knew which shape would suit her before being told. A good file is not something you pay a premium for in this city. It is something you have to ask for, in both of those rooms equally.
Not one of the six menus prices the file
The city price table was rebuilt on 2 October from the published menus of six Da Nang salons: a gel colour runs 70K to 300K, BIAB 300K to 450K, a full set of extensions 60K to 550K, a pedicure with gel colour 200K to 300K, removal 10K to 150K and nail art 5K to 120K a nail. Read all six menus looking for the file and you will not find it. Not as a service, not as an add-on, not as a surcharge.
What you find instead are bare care lines with the filing buried inside them. LENA Nails & Beauty lists Manicure at 70,000đ with no colour at all. Sunam Nail & Spa prices nail and pedi care for men and women at 100,000đ and, to its credit, itemises what that buys: remove, cut, file, nipper, cuticle pusher, buff, cuticle oil. Amor Spa's cheapest hand line is a 120,000đ basic manicure. Liti Nail & Hair starts at 150,000đ for base and top coat. Nail Bơ, the cheapest menu in the set, breaks out cắt da at 20,000đ and phá gel at 10,000đ but prices no filing of any kind. Six menus, six different ways of not charging for the thing that determines what your hands look like for the next three weeks.
Free work is unbilled work, and unbilled work is unpromised. Nobody is going to hand you a receipt with shape on it and nobody is going to refund it. Timi Nail, 105 Lê Đình Dương, 74 reviews, has the two-star version from July 2024: one nail came out crooked, the technician tried to fix it and it did not help, and the bill was double what had been quoted the day before. The crooked nail and the doubled bill are the same failure of specification, and only one of them had a price attached in advance.
The reverse is the best thing in this dataset. At LENA on Nguyễn Văn Thoại, 543 reviews, on 5 September 2026, a customer wrote that the technician filed every uneven spot without being asked · which many nail designers forget · and that the design came to 410K in total. The day after, at Rabbit & Co. Nails, 45 Trương Quyền in Sơn Trà, 47 reviews, an American visitor who had come in for a full redo wrote that the owner read her nail structure correctly on the first pass and then went back over some rough cuticles she had noticed but had not mentioned. Both reviews are praising labour that appears on no menu in the city.
The window shuts when the base coat goes on
The order of a Da Nang appointment is fixed: old product off, length cut, shape filed, cuticle worked, then base coat, then colour, then lamp. Everything before the base coat is reversible in under a minute. Everything after it is a removal.
Which is why the mid-file correction is normal and the post-colour one is not. The Nail By Nhỏ reviewer says it in as many words · she felt comfortable asking for the shape to be more round after she had started · and the review is five stars. At Nờ Nail Studio, 12 Tụ Quán, 156 reviews, the April 2026 regular describes being checked at every step, shape, colour and design in that sequence. At Liti Nail & Hair 2 on An Thượng 39, 1,307 reviews, a July customer could not make up her mind about colour or shape for a long time and writes that everyone was patient with her and kept going until she was happy. None of those three rooms needed the customer to be fluent. They needed her to speak before the lamp.
The Rabbit & Co. review is the cautionary half, and it is worth reading closely because it describes the exact failure mode. At a different salon the day before, she says, she spoke up in real time, more than once, while they were still working on her · and they covered it up and moved on instead of correcting it. By evening she could see and feel every spot that had been papered over. The redo meant taking everything off: extensions, acrylic, cat eye, toes. Speaking up only works while there is nothing on the nail yet; after that the shop's cheapest way out of a shape complaint is a thicker coat.
So do the dull thing. When the filing stops, hold both hands up at eye level, look along the free edges against the light rather than down at them, and answer before the base coat comes out of the drawer. If the answer is no: đừng dũa ngắn, don't file them short, or giữ nguyên độ dài, keep this length. If the answer is a shape rather than a length, don't translate it · a photo carries a shape better than any sentence does, and 48 of the 49 reviews here that describe showing one are five stars. What a correction costs after the colour is on: 10K to 150K for removal across the salons that publish prices, 40,000 to 60,000đ for Liti's broken-nail repair, 70,000đ for LENA's single fixed nail.
Length is a number. Say the number.
Short, medium and long are not lengths, they are opinions, and they are the three words most likely to survive translation into something you did not mean. Use the ruler on your phone, or hold the nail you want kept and point at the one you want cut back to. Millimetres are language-independent; medium is not.
The praise in this dataset goes to restraint. At Mây Nailroom, 93 Nguyễn Phong Sắc out in Cẩm Lệ, 37 reviews, a May 2026 customer's whole compliment about her gel toes is that the prep was thorough and her nails weren't made too short. At Ther Nail Room, 56 Phan Văn Định in Liên Chiểu, 65 reviews, a reviewer posts a photo two weeks on and points out that it is still her real shape. Both are describing a technician who filed less than she could have, and in a trade paid by the set that is a decision somebody made on purpose.
Going longer is a purchase, not a request. Extensions run 60K to 550K for a full set across the salons that publish prices, and Liti is the clearest in the city about why the spread is so wide: its BIAB and acrylic lines are sold as Natural, Short or Long, 400,000 to 500,000đ for the builder gel and 500,000 to 600,000đ for acrylic. Length is a line on the bill, so decide it before you are quoted, not after. The shop will meet you a long way too · Nờ Nail's technician ordered longer tips in specially for a customer who wanted a very long set · and at the other extreme Timi Nail has a five-star review from an American guitar player who turns up every couple of months for a single acrylic nail over a chronic split, and says it is better work than he gets at home.
One practical argument for going shorter than you would at home, and it is not aesthetic. You are going to spend this week gripping a scooter throttle, pulling a swimsuit strap, and handling 500,000đ notes in rooms where card fees of 3 to 20% show up in the reviews. The salt, the sand and the pool are already working against the set · that is its own piece in this journal · and every extra millimetre past your fingertip is leverage on the free edge. Da Nang is a city you do things with your hands in.
Keep the machine off the free edge
Two tools do the filing and they are not interchangeable. The electric file · máy mài, the drill · is the right tool for taking gel down and for cleaning the cuticle line, where a steady hand with a fine bit beats twenty minutes of acetone. The hand file is the right tool for the free edge, because that is where the shape and the length are, and because a bit spinning at 20,000 revolutions does not stop where you meant it to. The opinion of this piece is simple: on a natural nail, the edge should be cut with a hand file, and it is worth one sentence to ask.
The reviews that notice this are emphatic about it. At Liti Nail Hair My Khe Beach, 107A Đình Nghệ, 1,218 reviews, a March 2026 customer writes that the technician filed each nail delicately by hand, not with the machine but with an actual nail file, to get the shape and the length she had asked for; the same review ends by saying they do not destroy your natural nails and do not over-file, and prices the two hours of hands and feet at 800,000đ. At Chic nails, 68 Nguyễn Xí in Thanh Khê, 119 reviews, the March 2026 line is that they did not over-file and the technician checked whether her nail beds were overheating. Heat under the plate is not a fussy complaint; it is the thing that leaves a nail sore for days with nothing to show.
The failures run the other way. Chuty Nailroom, 169/5 Trần Phú, 69 reviews, three stars in January 2026: ordinary polish, which needed nothing but acetone, was read as gel and taken off with an electric file, and a single-colour gel manicure quoted at 30 minutes took two hours. Chic nails has the honest version too, from November 2025 · a BIAB refill on very thin nails left a few file scratches because it was hard to tell where the tip ended and the soft gel began. The common factor in both is not cruelty or incompetence. It is that nobody established what was on the nail before the machine was switched on, which is the same ten minutes this whole piece is about. Say what you are wearing.
Then look at the file itself, because it is a hygiene item and the two sharpest reviews in this dataset are about exactly that. LENA on Phạm Tu, 993 reviews, three stars in July 2026, written by a nail professional from Poland who praises the pedicure and the colour work and then says plainly that the clippers were sterilised but the drill bits and heel graters were not, and that the files and buffers should be disposable and some were visibly used. Azit Nail, 15 Nguyễn Thái Học, 1,349 reviews, three stars: they do not use a new nail file for each customer. A file is porous cardboard and grit. It cannot be sterilised, only thrown away, which is why the ninety-second check looks for one coming out of a packet and why the pouch on the counter matters more than the décor.
Where the file gets talked about, and when to go
The 31 salons where someone bothered to write about the shaping sit about where the guide itself sits, so this is not a reason to cross a bridge. Thirteen are in the Hải Châu side of the city, six on the My Khe beachfront, five in the My An and An Thượng grid, four in Thanh Khê, one in Sơn Trà and two out in the far wards. BIJOU Nails Studio, 57 Tạ Mỹ Duật, 149 reviews, is the only one in the set twice for the same thing: in March a customer who had never had her nails shaped so well, in July another on how precise the shaping was. CHIARRA on An Thượng 29, 183 reviews, and Shyn out on Phước Hòa 4 in Cẩm Lệ, 51 reviews, are the small-room versions; Liti 1 on Triệu Việt Vương, 751 reviews, DzonDzon on 2 Tháng 9, 755, and NAIL SWEET on An Thượng 3, 381, are the busy ones.
Go early. The city's own tourism portal reported on 2 July that Da Nang's accommodation had served nearly 9.8 million visitors in the first half of 2026, up 22.5% on 2025, almost 5.2 million of them international, and the fourth quarter is when the international share is highest. A full room is a fast room, and the filing is the first stage a fast room compresses · it is unpaid, it is invisible on the bill, and the customer rarely objects. The first slot of the day buys you the ten minutes this article is about. Most of this trade opens by nine.
Put it in the booking message rather than saving it for the chair. Salons here book by Zalo, WhatsApp and Instagram, so the night before: the photo, the length in millimetres, and dũa bằng tay for the edge. If the set is coming off first, say what is on it. That message is also the moment to ask the only question whose answer changes your afternoon · how long · because the clocks in these reviews run from ninety minutes to five hours.
And if you only get one sentence out before the file starts, do not spend it on the colour. The colour is sitting on a shelf with sixty others, it is the last thing to go on, and it can be changed in thirty seconds while the lamp is still cold · Thao Nails has a review about a customer who switched her green after the design was finished and was told, through Google Translate, that the shop would go along with whatever she wanted. The shape cannot be changed in thirty seconds. It is cut once, out of your own nail, and it does not grow back until December.
Frequently asked
How do I ask for a nail shape in Da Nang if I don't speak Vietnamese?
Show it rather than name it. Three of the 715 public reviews behind this guide name a shape at all, and none says square, oval, coffin or stiletto, so the English shape chart is not the working vocabulary in Da Nang salons. Bring a photo on your phone and send it in the booking message the night before: 48 of the 49 reviews here that describe showing a reference picture are five stars. Two Vietnamese phrases cover the rest, and both are about the filing stage, which is called dũa form: đừng dũa ngắn (don't file them short) and giữ nguyên độ dài (keep this length). Say the length as a number of millimetres, not as short, medium or long.
Do nail salons in Da Nang charge extra for shaping or filing?
No. None of the six Da Nang salons whose published menus this guide's price table rests on prices shaping or filing as a line of its own, as a service or as an add-on. It is bundled into the bare care lines: LENA Nails & Beauty lists a 70,000đ manicure with no colour, Sunam Nail & Spa a 100,000đ nail and pedi care itemised as remove, cut, file, nipper, cuticle pusher, buff and cuticle oil, Amor Spa a 120,000đ basic manicure, and Nail Bơ prices cuticle work (cắt da) at 20,000đ with no filing line at all. Because the shape costs nothing extra it is also never promised, so it has to be asked for and checked.
Can I change my nail shape after the technician has started?
Yes, while the nail is still bare, and that is the whole point. Filing comes before the base coat, so a correction during it costs a minute; reviews in this guide describe customers asking for a rounder shape mid-file and being taken through shape, colour and design step by step, all five stars. Once colour is on, the only fixes are a removal, which runs 10K to 150K across the salons that publish prices, or a repair line: Liti Nail & Hair publishes broken-nail repair at 40,000 to 60,000đ and LENA lists fix 1 nail at 70,000đ. Hold both hands up at eye level when the filing stops and answer before the base coat is opened.
Do Da Nang nail salons use an electric file or a hand file?
Both, and it is worth asking which goes where. The electric file (máy mài) is the normal tool for taking gel off and working the cuticle line; the hand file is the one that should shape the free edge of a natural nail. Reviews in this guide single out technicians who filed each nail by hand rather than with the machine, and who checked whether the nail bed was overheating under a drill bit. Two three-star reviews here are about the same tool from the hygiene side: one from a visiting nail professional who found the drill bits and heel graters unsterilised and the buffers reused, one noting that a new nail file was not used for each customer. A file is porous and cannot be sterilised, only replaced, so look for one coming out of a sealed packet. Ask for dũa bằng tay for the edge.
